In the field of sustainable chemistry, it is still a significant challenge to realize efficient light-powered space-confined catalysis and propulsion due to the limited solar absorption efficiency and the low mass and heat transfer efficiency. Here, novel semiconductor TiO2 nanorockets with asymmetric, hollow, mesoporous, and double-layer structures are successfully constructed through a facile interfacial superassembly strategy. The high concentration of defects and unique topological features improve light scattering and reduce the distance for charge migration and directed charge separation, resulting in enhanced light harvesting in the confined nanospace and resulting in enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion. The movement velocity of double-layered nanorockets can reach up to 10.5 µm s-1 under visible light, which is approximately 57 and 119% higher than that of asymmetric single-layered TiO2 and isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres, respectively. In addition, the double-layered nanorockets improve the degradation rate of the common pollutant methylene blue under sustainable visible light with a 247% rise of first-order rate constant compared to isotropic hollow TiO2 nanospheres. Furthermore, FEA simulations reveal and confirm the double-layered confined-space enhanced catalysis and self-propulsion mechanism.

High temperature requirement A1 (HTRA1) is a member of the serine protease family, comprising four structural domains: IGFBP domain, Kazal domain, protease domain and PDZ domain. HTRA1 encodes a serine protease, a secreted protein that is widely expressed in the vasculature. HTRA1 regulates a wide range of physiological processes through its proteolytic activity, and is also involved in a variety of vascular abnormalities-related diseases. This article reviews the role of HTRA1 in the development of vascular abnormalities-related hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), tumors and other diseases. Through relevant research advances to understand the role of HTRA1 in regulating signaling pathways or refolding, translocation, degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, thus directly or indirectly regulating angiogenesis, vascular remodeling, and playing an important role in vascular homeostasis, further understanding the mechanism of HTRA1's role in vascular abnormality-related diseases is important for HTRA1 to be used as a therapeutic target in related diseases.

Auxin regulates plant growth and development through downstream signaling pathways, including the best-known SCFTIR1/AFB-Aux/IAA-ARF pathway and several other less characterized "noncanonical" pathways. Recently, one SCFTIR1/AFB-independent noncanonical pathway, mediated by Transmembrane Kinase 1 (TMK1), was discovered through the analyses of its functions in Arabidopsis apical hook development. Asymmetric accumulation of auxin on the concave side of the apical hook triggers DAR1-catalyzed release of the C-terminal of TMK1, which migrates into the nucleus, where it phosphorylates and stabilizes IAA32/34 to inhibit cell elongation, which is essential for full apical hook formation. However, the molecular factors mediating IAA32/34 degradation have not been identified. Here, we show that proteins in the CYTOKININ INDUCED ROOT WAVING 1 (CKRW1)/WAVY GROWTH 3 (WAV3) subfamily act as E3 ubiquitin ligases to target IAA32/34 for ubiquitination and degradation, which is inhibited by TMK1c-mediated phosphorylation. This antagonistic interaction between TMK1c and CKRW1/WAV3 subfamily E3 ubiquitin ligases regulates IAA32/34 levels to control differential cell elongation along opposite sides of the apical hook.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), known for causing gastric inflammation, gastritis and gastric cancer, prompted our study to investigate the differential expression of cytokines in gastric tissues, which is crucial for understanding H. pylori infection and its potential progression to gastric cancer. Focusing on Il-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-18, and TNF-α, we analysed gene and protein levels to differentiate between H. pylori-infected and non-infected gastritis. We utilised real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for gene quantification, immunohistochemical staining, and ELISA for protein measurement. Gastric samples from patients with gastritis were divided into three groups: (1) non-gastritis (N-group) group, (2) gastritis without H. pylori infection (G-group), and (3) gastritis with H. pylori infection (GH-group), each consisting of 8 samples. Our findings revealed a statistically significant variation in cytokine expression. Generally, cytokine levels were higher in gastritis, but in H. pylori-infected gastritis, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-8 levels were lower compared to H. pylori-independent gastritis, while IL-12, IL-18, and TNF-α levels were higher. This distinct cytokine expression pattern in H. pylori-infected gastritis underscores a unique inflammatory response, providing deeper insights into its pathogenesis.

Objective: We present the case of a patient with clinical and imaging features of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) and positive IgLON5 antibodies (Abs) in the serum and CSF. Case report: A 66-year-old Chinese man presented to the hospital with a stroke-like episode, followed by rapidly progressive cognitive decline, mutism, and parkinsonism. The MRI results showed a cortical ribboning sign in diffusion-weighted MRI, periodic triphasic waves with a slow background in EEG, and positive protein 14-3-3 in CSF. There were matching IgLON5 Abs in the serum and CSF. A literature review showed positive autoimmune encephalitis Abs or autoimmune inflammatory disease between 0.5 and 8.6% among patients with clinical suspicion of CJD, most commonly anti-voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex and anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) Abs; however, IgLON5 autoimmunity in CJD has been rarely reported. This is an intriguing association as both conditions have been associated with brain deposits of phosphorylated tau protein. Conclusion: IgLON5 Abs may be observed in patients with a diagnosis of CJD; it is unknown whether a synergistic effect of IgLON5 Abs with CJD exists, increasing neurodegenerative changes.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone sarcoma arising from mesenchymal stem cells. The biological role of Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4), recently identified as an oncogene in numerous tumor types, remains largely unclear in OS. In this study, we investigated the expression of ACSL4 in OS tissues using immunohistochemistry staining (IHC) staining of a human tissue microarray and in OS cells by qPCR assay. Our findings revealed a significant up-regulation of ACSL4 in both OS tissues and cells. To further understand its biological effects, we conducted a series of loss-of-function experiments using ACSL4-depleted MNNG/HOS and U-2OS cell lines, focusing on OS cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis in vitro. Our results demonstrated that ACSL4 knockdown remarkably suppressed OS cell proliferation, arrested cells in the G2 phase, induced cell apoptosis, and inhibited cell migration. Additionally, a subcutaneous xenograft mice model was established to validate the in vivo impact of ACSL4, revealing ACSL4 silencing impaired tumor growth in the OS xenograft mice. Additionally, we discovered that ACSL4 could regulate the phosphorylation level of Smad2 through cooperative interactions, and treatment with a TGF-ß inhibitor weakened the promoting effects of ACSL4 overexpression. In short, ACSL4 regulated OS progression by modulating TGF-ß/Smad2 signaling pathway. These findings underscore ACSL4 as a promising therapeutic target for OS patients and contribute novel insights into the pathogenesis of OS.

In this study, we developed a multi-site acylation strategy to improve the lipophilicity and cellular uptake of troxerutin, a natural flavonoid with many health-promoting bioactivities. By clarifying the acylation properties of troxerutin catalyzed by lipases from different sources, a series of troxerutin ester derivatives acylated at different sites was synthesized, including troxerutin dipropyl (TDP), tripropyl (TTP), tetrapropyl (TEP), dibutyl (TDB), monohexyl (TMH), monooctyl (TMO) and monodecyl (TMD) esters. Interestingly, the troxerutin esters acylated at multiple sites with shorter fatty chains (TDP, TTP and TEP) had similar lipophilicity to the mono-acylated esters bearing longer fatty chains (TMH, TMO and TMD, respectively) and meanwhile demonstrated surprisingly lower cytotoxicity than that of the long fatty-chain mono-esters. In particular, the multi-acylated esters with shorter fatty chains showed remarkably higher cellular uptake than the mono-esters with long fatty chains. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion suggested that the multi-acylated esters of troxerutin were more resistant to gastrointestinal degradation than the mono-esters. These results indicated that multi-site acylation with short fatty chains could be an effective alternative to introducing one-site mono-acylation for the modification of troxerutin and other flavonoid compounds.

Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharide (PSP) has demonstrated diverse medicinal properties, extensively researched for human applications. Nonetheless, there is a lack of studies investigating the potential advantages of PSP in poultry farming. The present study investigated the impact of incorporating PSP into broiler diets on their growth performance, meat quality, blood metabolites, antioxidative status, and ileal histomorphology. Two hundred and forty-one-day-old male Ross-308 broiler chicks (44.98 ± 0.79 g) were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups, with 8 replicates of 10 birds each. The birds were fed diets supplemented with PSP at 0, 400, and 800 mg/kg (control, PSP400, and PSP800, respectively). The results revealed a linear (P > 0.05) improvement in body weight gain, European production efficiency index, and feed conversion ratio during the grower (22-35 d) and overall periods (1-35 d). The pH levels in the ingluvies, ileum, and cecum exhibited a linear reduction (P > 0.05) in the PSP800 group at d 21 and d 35, respectively. Villus height and crypt depth were increased in the PSP400 and PSP800 groups compared to the control group. PSP400 and PSP800 groups exhibited decreased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels and increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) at 21 d, while at 35 d, TAC and sulfhydryl concentrations were elevated, and H2O2 was reduced only in the PSP800 group compared to the untreated one. No significant variations between the groups at the phylum and genus levels were observed, with Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes being the dominant phyla. However, PSP supplementation notably augmented Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobiota while reducing Euryarchaeota and Proteobacteria. At the genus level, there was an increase in Akkermansia, Alistipes, CHKCI001, Erysipelatoclostridium, and a decrease in Methanobrevibacter. Conclusively, incorporating PSP into broiler diets, particularly at a dosage of 800 mg/kg, improved growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal architecture and resulted in alterations in cecal microbiota without discernible impacts on digestive function and meat quality criteria.

BACKGROUND: Observational evidence suggests that type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with the risk of osteoporosis (OP). Nevertheless, it is not apparent whether these correlations indicate a causal relationship. To elucidate the causal relationship, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed. METHODS: T1DM data was obtained from the large genome-wide association study (GWAS), in which 6683 cases and 12,173 controls from 12 European cohorts were involved. Bone mineral density (BMD) samples at four sites were extracted from the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporosis (GEFOS) consortium, including forearm (FA) (n = 8,143), femoral neck (FN) (n = 32,735), lumbar spine (LS) (n = 28,498), and heel (eBMD) (n = 426,824). The former three samples were from mixed populations and the last one was from European. Inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger, and weighted median tests were used to test the causal relationship between T1DM and OP. A series of sensitivity analyses were then conducted to verify the robustness of the results. RESULTS: Twenty-three independent SNPs were associated with FN-BMD and LS-BMD, twenty-seven were associated with FA-BMD, and thirty-one were associated with eBMD. Inverse variance-weighted estimates indicated a causal effect of T1DM on FN-BMD (odds ratio (OR) =1.033, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.012-1.054, p = 0.002) and LS-BMD (OR = 1.032, 95 % CI: 1.005-1.060, p = 0.022) on OP risk. Other MR methods, including weighted median and MR-Egger, calculated consistent trends. While no significant causation was found between T1DM and the other sites (FA-BMD: OR = 1.008, 95 % CI: 0.975-1.043, p = 0.632; eBMD: OR = 0.993, 95 % CI: 0.985-1.001, p = 0.106). No significant heterogeneity (except for eBMD) or horizontal pleiotropy was found for instrumental variables, suggesting these results were reliable and robust. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows a causal relationship between T1DM and the risk of some sites of OP (FN-BMD, LS-BMD), allowing for continued research to discover the clinical and experimental mechanisms of T1DM and OP. It also contributes to the recommendation if patients with T1DM need targeted care to promote bone health and timely prevention of osteoporosis.

Natural polymer-based adhesive hydrogels have garnered significant interest for their outstanding strength and versatile applications, in addition to being eco-friendly. However, the adhesive capabilities of purely natural products are suboptimal, which hampers their practical use. To address this, we engineered carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) surfaces with complementary bases, adenine (A) and thymine (T), to facilitate the self-assembly of adhesive hydrogels (CMC-AT) with a nanofiber configuration. Impressively, the shear adhesive strength reached up to 6.49 MPa with a mere 2% adhesive concentration. Building upon this innovation, we conducted a comparative analysis of the shear adhesion properties between CMC and CMC-AT hydrogel adhesives when applied to delignified and non-delignified wood chips. We examined the interplay between the adhesives and the substrate, as well as the role of mechanical interlocking in overall adhesion performance. Our findings offer a fresh perspective on the development of new biodegradable polymer hydrogel adhesives.

OBJECTIVES: Early detection of cognitive impairment is essential for timely intervention. Currently, most widely used cognitive screening tests are influenced by language and cultural differences; therefore, there is a need for the development of a language-neutral, visual-based cognitive assessment tool. The Visual Cognitive Assessment Test (VCAT), a 30-point test that assesses memory, executive function, visuospatial function, attention, and language, has demonstrated its utility in a multilingual population. In this study, we evaluated the reliability, validity, and diagnostic performance of the VCAT for screening early cognitive impairment in Chongqing, China METHODS: A total of 134 individuals (49 healthy controls (HCs), 52 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 33 with mild dementia) completed the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), VCAT, and domain-specific neuropsychological assessments. The diagnostic performances of MMSE, MoCA, and VCAT were evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. Construct validity of the VCAT was assessed with well-established domain-specific cognitive assessments. Reliability was measured using Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: The VCAT and its subdomains demonstrated both good construct validity and internal consistency (α = 0.577). The performance of VCAT was comparable to that of MoCA and MMSE in differentiating mild dementia from nondemented groups (AUC: 0.940 vs. 0.902 and 0.977, respectively; p = .098 and .053) and in distinguishing cognitive impairment (CI) from HC (AUC: 0.929 vs. 0.899 and 0.891, respectively; p = .239 and .161), adjusted for education level. The optimal score range for VCAT in determining dementia, MCI, and HC was 0-14, 15-19, and 20-30, respectively. CONCLUSION: The VCAT proves to be a reliable screening test for early cognitive impairment within our cohort. Being both language and cultural neutral, the VCAT has the potential to be utilized among a wider population within China.

BACKGROUND: Condom use at last intercourse is an effective indicator for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention. To identify at-risk individuals and improve prevention strategies, this study explored factors associated with condomless sex at last intercourse in the last year and developed a risk estimation model to calculate the individual possibility of condomless sex among college students in Zhuhai, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1430 college students who had sex in the last year from six universities in Zhuhai. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and logistic regression were performed to explore the predictors of condomless sex. The nomogram was constructed to calculate the individual possibility of condomless sex. Discrimination and calibration of the nomogram were evaluated using the area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUROC) and the calibration curve. RESULTS: The proportion of students who had condomless sex at last intercourse was 18.2% (260/1430). Students who had experienced more types of intimate partner violence (aOR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.31 ~ 1.92) and had anal sex (aOR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.06 ~ 2.84) were more likely to have condomless sex. Students who had heterosexual intercourse (aOR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.21 ~ 0.70), used condoms at first sex (aOR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.14 ~ 0.27), had high attitudes towards condom use (aOR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.80 ~ 0.95) and self-efficacy for condom use (aOR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.78 ~ 0.90) were less likely to have condomless sex. The nomogram had high accuracy with an AUROC of 0.83 and good discrimination. CONCLUSIONS: Intimate partner violence, anal sex, condom use at first sex, attitude towards condom use, and self-efficacy for condom use were associated with condomless sex among college students. The nomogram was an effective and convenient tool for calculating the individualized possibility of condomless sex among college students. It could help to identify individuals at risk and help universities and colleges to formulate appropriate individualized interventions and sexual health education programs.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of clinical examples suggest that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) appears to have an impact on the treatment of patients with liver cancer compared to the normal population, and the prevalence of COVID-19 is significantly higher in patients with liver cancer. However, this mechanism of action has not been clarified. AIM: To investigate the disease relevance of COVID-19 in liver cancer. METHODS: Gene sets for COVID-19 (GSE180226) and liver cancer (GSE87630) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. After identifying the common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of COVID-19 and liver cancer, functional enrichment analysis, protein-protein interaction network construction and screening and analysis of hub genes were performed. Subsequently, the validation of the differential expression of hub genes in the disease was performed and the regulatory network of transcription factors and hub genes was constructed. RESULTS: Of 518 common DEGs were obtained by screening for functional analysis. Fifteen hub genes including aurora kinase B, cyclin B2, cell division cycle 20, cell division cycle associated 8, nucleolar and spindle associated protein 1, etc., were further identified from DEGs using the "cytoHubba" plugin. Functional enrichment analysis of hub genes showed that these hub genes are associated with P53 signalling pathway regulation, cell cycle and other functions, and they may serve as potential molecular markers for COVID-19 and liver cancer. Finally, we selected 10 of the hub genes for in vitro expression validation in liver cancer cells. CONCLUSION: Our study reveals a common pathogenesis of liver cancer and COVID-19. These common pathways and key genes may provide new ideas for further mechanistic studies.

Background: Psoriasis is a highly heterogeneous autoinflammatory disease. At present, heterogeneity in disease has not been adequately translated into concrete treatment options. Our aim was to develop and verify a new stratification scheme that identifies the heterogeneity of psoriasis by the integration of large-scale transcriptomic profiles, thereby identifying patient subtypes and providing personalized treatment options whenever possible. Methods: We performed functional enrichment and network analysis of upregulated differentially expressed genes using microarray datasets of lesional and non-lesional skin samples from 250 psoriatic patients. Unsupervised clustering methods were used to identify the skin subtypes. Finally, an Xgboost classifier was utilized to predict the effects of methotrexate and commonly prescribed biologics on skin subtypes. Results: Based on the 163 upregulated differentially expressed genes, psoriasis patients were categorized into three subtypes (subtypes A-C). Immune cells and proinflammatory-related pathways were markedly activated in subtype A, named immune activation. Contrastingly, subtype C, named stroma proliferation, was enriched in integrated stroma cells and tissue proliferation-related signaling pathways. Subtype B was modestly activated in all the signaling pathways. Notably, subtypes A and B presented good responses to methotrexate and interleukin-12/23 inhibitors (ustekinumab) but inadequate responses to tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors and interleukin-17A receptor inhibitors. Contrastly, subtype C exhibited excellent responses to tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors (etanercept) and interleukin-17A receptor inhibitors (brodalumab) but not methotrexate and interleukin-12/23 inhibitors. Conclusions: Psoriasis patients can be assorted into three subtypes with different molecular and cellular characteristics based on the heterogeneity of the skin's immune cells and the stroma, determining the clinical responses of conventional therapies.

BACKGROUND: Weight management is an effective prevention and treatment strategy for diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of diabetic patients towards weight management. METHODS: Diabetic patients treated at Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, between January 2023 and June 2023 were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect their demographic characteristics and KAP toward weight management. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the inter-relationships among KAP scores. RESULTS: Among a total of 503 valid questionnaires that were collected, 55.07% were filled out by men and 54.67% by those aged < 60 years. The mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and practice were 8.03 ± 3.525 (possible range: 0-13), 31.88 ± 3.524 (possible range: 10-50), and 22.24 ± 3.318 (possible range: 9-45), respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed the knowledge was positively associated with attitude (r = 0.295, P < 0.001) and practice (r = 0.131, P < 0.001), and attitude was positively associated with practice (r = 0.140, P = 0.002). SEM demonstrated positive associations between knowledge and attitude (ß = 0.28, P < 0.001), and attitude and practice (ß = 0.09, P = 0.019). Moreover, older age was negatively associated with knowledge (ß=-0.04, P = 0.001), while higher education (ß = 1.220, P < 0.001), increased monthly income (ß = 0.779, P < 0.001), diagnosis of fatty liver (ß = 1.03, P = 0.002), and screening for excess visceral fat (ß = 1.11, P = 0.002) were positively associated with knowledge. CONCLUSION: Diabetic patients showed moderate knowledge, neutral attitudes, and inappropriate practices toward weight management. Knowledge was positively associated with attitude and practice. These findings provided valuable directions for healthcare interventions targeting improved KAP status of weight management among diabetic patients.

Transition metal sulfides have been considered as promising electrode materials for future super-capacitors due to their spinel structures and environmentally friendly properties. Among these materials, NiCo2S4 compounds exhibit high theoretical specific capacity but poor cycling performance. To address this issue, we synthesize several NiCo2S4 urchin balls. The NCS-1.5 nanospheres demonstrate a specific capacitance of 1352.2 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, and maintain high specific capacity after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. An asymmetric capacitor assembled with the NCS-1.5 sample as the cathode and activated carbon as the anode achieve an energy density of 45.5 W h kg-1 at 2025 W kg-1. The urchin-like nanospheres also facilitate the combination with other materials, providing potential insights for the synthesis of supercapacitor electrode materials.

Psychosocial stress negatively impacts reproductive function by inhibiting pulsatile luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion. The posterodorsal medial amygdala (MePD) is responsible in part for processing stress and modulating the reproductive axis. Activation of the neurokinin 3 receptor (NK3R) suppresses the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) pulse generator, under hypoestrogenic conditions, and NK3R activity in the amygdala has been documented to play a role in stress and anxiety. We investigate whether NK3R activation in the MePD is involved in mediating the inhibitory effect of psychosocial stress on LH pulsatility in ovariectomised female mice. First, we administered senktide, an NK3R agonist, into the MePD and monitored the effect on pulsatile LH secretion. We then delivered SB222200, a selective NK3R antagonist, intra-MePD in the presence of predator odour, 2,4,5-trimethylthiazole (TMT) and examined the effect on LH pulses. Senktide administration into the MePD dose-dependently suppresses pulsatile LH secretion. Moreover, NK3R signalling in the MePD mediates TMT-induced suppression of the GnRH pulse generator, which we verified using a mathematical model. The model verifies our experimental findings: (i) predator odour exposure inhibits LH pulses, (ii) activation of NK3R in the MePD inhibits LH pulses and (iii) NK3R antagonism in the MePD blocks stressor-induced inhibition of LH pulse frequency in the absence of ovarian steroids. These results demonstrate for the first time that NK3R neurons in the MePD mediate psychosocial stress-induced suppression of the GnRH pulse generator.

Guaico Culex virus (GCXV) is a newly identified segmented Jingmenvirus from Culex spp. mosquitoes in Central and South America. The genome of GCXV is composed of four or five single-stranded positive RNA segments. However, the infection kinetics and transmission capability of GCXV in mosquitoes remain unknown. In this study, we used reverse genetics to rescue two GCXVs (4S and 5S) that contained four and five RNA segments, respectively, in C6/36 â€‹cells. Further in vitro characterization revealed that the two GCXVs exhibited comparable replication kinetics, protein expression and viral titers. Importantly, GCXV RNAs were detected in the bodies, salivary glands, midguts and ovaries of Culex quinquefasciatus at 4-10 days after oral infection. In addition, two GCXVs can colonize Cx. quinquefasciatus eggs, resulting in positive rates of 15%-35% for the second gonotrophic cycle. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that GCXVs with four or five RNA segments can be detected in Cx. quinquefasciatus eggs during the first and second gonotrophic cycles after oral infection.

Hierarchical structure and surface topography play pivotal roles in developing high-performance solar-driven evaporators for clean water production; however, there exists a notable gap in research addressing simultaneous modulation of internal microstructure and surface topography in hydrogels to enhance both solar steam generation performance and desalination efficiency. Herein, anisotropic poly(vinyl alcohol)/MXene composite hydrogels for efficient solar-driven water evaporation and wastewater purification are fabricated using a template-assisted directional freezing approach followed by precise surface wettability modulation. The resultant composite hydrogels exhibit vertically oriented channels that ensure fast water supply during evaporation, and their poly(vinyl alcohol) skeletons can reduce the vaporization enthalpy of the water in the hydrogels. The incorporation of MXene sheets enables efficient solar light absorption and solar-thermal conversion while providing structural reinforcement to the hydrogels. More importantly, the as-created undulating solar-thermal surface, featuring modulated hydrophilic troughs and hydrophobic crests, significantly enhances solar-thermal conversion efficiency, thereby boosting solar evaporation performances. As a result, the fabricated hydrogel-based evaporator exhibits an impressive evaporation rate of 2.55 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation, coupled with long-term durability and desalination stability. Notably, the outstanding mechanical robustness of the hydrogel further enables high portability through a readily achievable process of reversible dehydration/hydration.
